Uranium Tailings

A new regional project «Strengthening Coordination of Project Formulation and Mobilization of Resources for Sustainable Radioactive Waste Management in Central Asia» was discussed yesterday at UN House. The round table with participation of representatives of Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, as well as ministries and agencies, NGO, National Science Academy of the Kyrgyz Republic was initiated by the UNDP in Kyrgyzstan and Environment and Security Initiative in Central Asia.

More than  800 mln. tons of the USSR uranium legacy in Central Asia require urgent global solution 

 29 June 2009 — The high level International Forum «Uranium Tailings in Central Asia: Local Problems, Regional Consequences, Global Solution» kicks off today at Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland. Co-operation between international organizations and the countries of Central Asia should be stepped up to manage radioactive waste, which remains a major transboundary challenge in the region, said participants at a meeting held by the OSCE in Vienna 7 MAY 2009. Read more »»»

The program of the fourth day of the Regional Conference «Uranium Tailings: Local Problems, Regional Consequences, Global Solution» included the final plenary session, which summed up the results of the group works in 4 sections.
