Regulatory framework in the area of radioactive waste management in the Republic of Kazakhstan

On the whole the country has rather well developed regulatory base. Security  of population and environment from radioactive pollution in Kazakhstan are regulated by the following  documents :

  • Law of the RK «On Radiation Safety of Population».
  • Law of the RK «On Sanitary and Epidemiological Wellbeing of the Population».
  • Law of the RK «On the Use of Atomic Energy».
  • Law of the RK «On Subsurface Resources and Subsurface Management».
  • Environmental Code of RK .
  • Radiation safety is provided by meeting the standards in the acting normative acts НРБ 99
  • Sanitary rules and norms «Sanitary and Hygiene Requirements for Ensuring Radiation Safety of Oil and Gas Facilities» .
  • Sanitary-Epidemiological rules, conservation and reorientation of uranium mining and processing enterprises.
  • Sanitary rules for handling radioactive wastes.
  • Land conservation rules.

The country has the State Programme «Conservation of uranium mining enterprises and cleaning up the consequences of development of uranium deposits for 2001—2010». This programme is funded from the country budget (in the amount of more than 3 mln.USD annually).
